The city of Sheffield, located in the central part of England, built a castle in 1270 as the residence for the local nobility. After enduring the test of time, it was destroyed in 1649 and buried beneath the ground. Subsequently, the local people gradually established a market on this area, called "Castle Market". Around this area, town halls, courts, etc. were gradually built, and it gradually became the city's central area. However, nowadays, the city's center has been moved elsewhere, and this area has become increasingly depressed with fewer public activities. This has also brought about social problems such as high crime rates in this area.
This project aims to renovate this site and enable the third generation of "Castle Market" to bring more vitality to the city. By evoking the memories of this city and promoting the exchange of different cultures within it.

Concept design

My plan for the revival of the ancient castle is divided into four parts: vertical farms: used to lease farmland to citizens who don't have gardens at home; memory towers: used to protect the ruins of the ancient castle and awaken people's memories of it; the area facing the road is for selling and cooking; and there is also a part of ground farmland that is also for lease.

the tower of memory

These structures are connected by walking paths. At the bottom, there are still the ruins of the castle. Tourists can walk down the stairs to the underground and closely observe the ruins of the castle. You can directly walk to the footpath outside the site and then exit the site. People observing the ruins will not affect the farmers renting the farmland within the site. Maybe in the early morning, a runner is running on the sidewalk, enjoying the on-site planting, and then running down the sidewalk and continuing to run on the city road.
